The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network collects, analyzes, and shares data to help identify the causes of child deaths in areas with high child mortality. CHAMPS operates sites in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and South Africa; collecting laboratory results, clinical information, and verbal autopsy data on perinatal and under-five child deaths, as well as maternal health data if available. CHAMPS data offer an unprecedented level of precision and accuracy about child mortality in places where information about the causes of child deaths was previously incomplete, inaccurate or non-existent. It uses minimally invasive tissue sampling, or MITS, to determine causes of death and relies on the principles and techniques of pathology to identify factors that cause and contribute to deaths and stillbirths. Its inclusive, open-access approach to data-sharing is designed to stimulate and incorporate creative new ideas to prevent child mortality. CHAMPS will help governments, public health programs and child health advocates in their efforts to prevent childhood deaths and illness.

  • NOTE:

  • The CHAMPS Network is an active surveillance network. The most recent version of the dataset (v3.0) is updated monthly with additional records and may include modifications to records that were previously released.
  • Datasets receive new version numbers when a major content change occurs within the dataset (e.g. new fields, tables, or a methodology change to the processing or presentation of the data.)
